Shelly Gordon: Tell us a little bit about when you were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
Patient (Thomas Newall): I learned I had Prostate Cancer December 2016. That event changed my life. I was on a trip to Washington D.C. and I noticed I had some blood in my urine. And I always felt like I had the need to go. So I called my Primary back here in Boston and gave him my symptoms and everything and he advised me to go to the emergency room right away down in the D.C. area but I had to wait until I got back to Boston.
Which I did, I went to the emergency room right away. They did some tests, gave me some medication and told me to have a follow up with a Urologist. Which I did two days later with the Urologist I have, Dr. Gluck. He wanted to do a biopsy on me right away because he saw the symptoms I was going through. He took some samples, 12 to 15 I think, which was very painful to me, but it made me go through everything. It was like a week before Thanksgiving, and due to the holidays everything was closed, so I didn’t get to find about the results until early December.
My wife was there with me when Dr. Gluck told me I had Prostate Cancer. And when he did, I shut down. I just didn’t hear anything else after that. All I knew was that I had Prostate Cancer and I wanted to do whatever I could to get rid of it. My wife kind of cursed at me and she said, “Thomas you need to focus because he’s giving you some options that you need to do.” He gave me some options and then he said HIFU, and I said Hi-Who? And he gave me a brief description on HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) and how it had been used in other countries and the success rate using HIFU which is a high technology that would be pretty good if I had that procedure done.
I really wanted to do that HIFU because I was intrigued by it. So I called my Primary Doctor for a time to discuss with him what I should do, what he thought about it. And he did the same thing I did. He said Hi-Who? And I said HIFU! I gave him the literature I had that I had received from Dr. Gluck. He read it over, and days later he called me back over to his office and he said, “Thomas if I had Prostate Cancer I would go with this procedure, HIFU.”
That’s when I decided to get myself an early birthday present, and I had the procedure done on the 20th of December 2016.
SG: How are you doing today?
P: Today, I’m excellent. I’m healthy. I’m running around. I’m back to refereeing basketball. Running up and down the court. Doing things I like to do. I’m exercising. I’m just enjoying it right now.
